“Why do we love the sea? It is because it has some potent power to make us think things we like to think.”

Russian Tycoon’s Crew Saves Divers in Playa del Carmen

Suleiman Kerimov

Suleiman Kerimov is the 118th richest man in the world

The crew of a yacht belonging to Russian billionaire Suleiman Kerimov has saved the lives of a group of divers who got into trouble in the Caribbean Sea when their boat was wrecked by strong waves, the Komsomolskaya Pravda daily newspaper reported on Tuesday.

The accident involving nine divers sailing some 4 miles from the shore in a 29-meter plastic boat occurred early on Tuesday, February 21, the newspaper said. The divers were on their way from the  island of Cozumel to the  Playa del Carmen, which hosts a shark diving spot.

Some two and half hours after they got in trouble, a SOS signal was received by Kerimov’s ICE yacht, which was sailing nearby.  The yacht raced to the scene where the divers were discovered two hours later some 16 miles away from the site where their boat had sunk.

Three patrol boats arrived at the site and found the divers  on board the yacht, the report said.  Officials credited the Russian tycoon’s crew saves divers in Playa del Carmen

Kerimov, who is listed as number 118 on Forbes’ list of the World’s Billionaires, with an estimated net worth of $7.8 billion, was reported to have given a reward to the captain of the yacht.

Key Mayan Sites in Mexico

Key Mayan Sites in Mexico

UNESCO World Heritage Sites are key Mayan sites in Mexico

Mundo Maya is a tourism initiative linking the Mexican states of Campeche, Chiapas, Quintana Roo, Yucatan and Tabasco. This region is home to 6 of Mexico’s 27 UNESCO World Heritage sites, the most found in any other country in the world. Mexico estimates that 52 million tourists will visit southeastern Mexico in 2012, spending approximately $23 million.

Chichen Itza

Chichen Itza is a day trip from Playa del Carmen, but you can no longer climb to the top.Tulum is a much more accessible Maya site, and is located on the water an hour's drive from Playa del Carmen

Tulum

Tulum is much more accessible than Chichen Itza, and is only an hour away from Playa del Carmen

CNN’s World’s Treasures asked Jeff Morgan, Executive Director of the Global Heritage Fund to compile a list of key Mayan sites in Mexico. The UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Chichen Itza in the state of Yucatan and Palenque in Chiapas made the list, as did the seaside site of Tulum, in Quintana Roo.

Also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Palenque, in Chiapas, Mexico, is nestled deep in the jungle, the tops of its many temples often wreathed in mist.

The site boasts stepped pyramids, including the impressive Temple of Inscriptions, carved stone walls and even the burial site of Pakal the Great, Palenque’s 7th-century ruler.

Palenque is in the woods, often surrounded by mist

Best Restaurants in Playa del Carmen, Guest Review

Thank you Amy H. from Ohio for sharing your restaurant recommendations with us!

Amy recently stayed with us (“We had a great time – everything was up to our expectations and the breakfast perk at Indigo Beach Club was a great way to start the day… along with a mimosa”) and shared the following restaurant tips with us on the Best restaurants in Playa del Carmen:

One night we ate at El Ten. This was recommended by someone who lives in Playa. We each had a steak (their best cuts), that comes with salads, bread, and we ordered a bottle of wine for around $45. We gave them our VIP restaurant card from El Taj and they ended up giving us 18% off our bill. Calle 30 and 5th Ave.

Another night we ate at Restaurant Sur. They had wonderful cuts of beef and overall service was surpurb. Sitting in the upper level was nice and private but you could still look over on 5th Ave and see all the action. 5th Ave and Calle 14.

One night we had a chef come to our condo and cook a traditional Mexican meal for us. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone… they were very professional and offered a lot of information about the food and culture. Their business is: Epicurean Chef Services at www.epicureanchefservices.com/

Side Note from Laura: Another Chef service I highly recommend is CosCo

Thanks, Amy!
