Transportation

Getting to Mexico

Airlines

All the major airlines fly to Cancun, but don’t forget to check out the charters as well. Oftentimes you can get very cheap airfare with Apple, Funjet, USAir 3000, etc.

Check out Cheapoair

You fly to Cancun, then take a cab, a shuttle, a bus, or prearranged transportation to Playa del Carmen. It is about a 40 minute drive south of the airport. Our front desk can arrange transportation to/from the airport for you. It is $170 roundtrip for a party of up to 6 people. They greet you with cold water, and cold cloths. Best Transfers can also do the same (without the cloths or water) for $110. Otherwise,   it’s about $70 to take a cab from the airport to Playa. It’s about $50 to take a cab from Playa back to the airport. Fares can vary depending on the price of gas, time of year, etc., but are pretty constant. It’s the quickest way to go.

Bus

There are public buses that take about 70 minutes to go from the Airport to/from Playa. The bus station in Playa is right on 5th Ave and is convenient. Cost is about $5 each way.

Shuttles

There are also shuttles that will take you to Playa.

You could, of course, rent a car, but it’s usually not worth it. Rental cars at the airport are expensive and you don’t need a car in Playa. If you decide to do a trip somewhere, you can cheaply rent a car in Playa for a day or two or call Fernando or Miguel.

Miguel has a cab, speaks great English, is reliable and fun. His taxi can accomodate 4-5 people. Please tell him Laura from Porto Playa referred you.

Fernando has a van, speaks terrific English, is reliable, fun, and also runs a tour business. His telephone number is 984-150-5368. Please tell him Laura from Porto Playa referred you.

Cabs

Taxi’s are cheap in Playa and are readily available.

Collectivo:

A collectivo is a passenger van which acts as a communal taxi carrying anywhere from eight to 12 people. These travel up and down Highway 307, the Yucatan Peninsula’s main artery, picking up and dropping off passengers along the way. Many of these vans are new and air-conditioned, and the fares are incredibly reasonable; you can cruise all the way to Cancun for less than $4 and, depending on how many stops the driver makes, the trip normally takes no more than an hour. To catch a ride, either flag down one of the vans as it approaches you on the road or walk to the stand at 2nd Street between Avenues 15 and 20.
